Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei) as a synthesis of his martial studies and philosophy. O Sensei's goal was to create and disseminate a martial art through which a practitioner could achieve the ability to defend him/herself without causing harm to an attacker.
Aikido means: “Way of Life to find Harmony with Nature”. In the Art of Aikido there is no aggression, tension or competition. Aikido is not merely a series of techniques designed to overcome or subdue an opponent, it involves exercises which embrace many universal laws of motion and natural movement. These exercises simulate problems in daily life. We learn that force and aggression are useless in dealing with a partner holding you. Physical strength is of no consequence in Aikido. The unique principles in this art are directly applicable to our daily lives. At the same time they give us a practical method of dealing with many problems that we may face.
