Aikido is not a sport, it is practiced cooperatively not in competition. But like a sport, students enjoy physical exercise whilst learning special skills. There are rules in Aikido, and these rules are called 'etiquette' and begin with the bow. The bow is a show of respect for the Art, for your teachers and for your fellow students.
When in the dojo (the place of practice), teachers are called 'Sensei' by their students. Literally, this means a person who is born before, but in Japan anyone that is a teacher is called Sensei.
Politeness - rules of behavior and common decency are very much part of Ki Aikido. All students are expected to acquaint themselves with Aikido etiquette. As you continue to practice the reason for these rules will become clearer. You will begin to understand the principle and spirit of Aikido and feel a great benefit from your practice.
